Offered here is an original 1853 embossed invitation broadside measuring approximately 5.75 x 3.75 inches, announcing a Fancy Dress and Civic Ball to be held at Tiffany’s Hall in Collinsville, Connecticut, on Friday, February 18, 1853. The card is printed in brown ink with a decorative American eagle at top and surrounded by an ornate blind-embossed floral border.
The invitation reads in part:
“Fancy Dress and Civic Ball
To be given at Tiffany’s Hall, Collinsville,
On Friday, the 18th of February, 1853.
The company of yourself and Ladies is respectfully solicited.”
Managers listed include A. H. BARBER, S. J. BECKWITH, M. C. BROCKETT, and JOSEPH CLARK, with L. CARRIER (Floor Manager) and L. CONVERSE (Prompter). Music was provided by the “Old Gent’s Band of New Haven.” Tickets were $1.00, supper extra, with dancing to commence at 7 o’clock.
This is a fine example of a mid-19th century Connecticut social event invitation, reflecting the popular masquerade and civic balls of the pre-Civil War era. The embossed border and eagle motif are characteristic of higher-end job printing of the early 1850s.
