$155.55
Original 1897 “The Seasons” illustrated calendar published by E. P. Dutton & Co., New York and marked “Printed in Bavaria.”
This beautiful late-Victorian calendar is complete with all 12 months, January through December 1897, arranged across six decorative illustrated leaves. Each page features richly colored seasonal flowers and botanical imagery accompanied by period poetry and inspirational verse.
The calendar progresses through the seasons with roses, primroses, violets, flowering branches, nasturtiums and other botanical subjects. Quotations are credited to writers including A. A. Procter, Emerson, Robert Burns, Whittier and Hemans.
The decorative January/February cover reads “The Seasons – Calendar for 1897” and features large pink and red roses. Publisher markings include E. P. Dutton & Co., New York and “Printed in Bavaria.”
Especially attractive are the elaborate die-cut flowering branches extending beyond the edges of the calendar pages, giving the piece an almost three-dimensional appearance. A ribbon bow remains at the top along with metal hanging hardware.
Condition: Antique condition with expected age-related wear including toning, foxing/spotting, staining, edge wear, small tears, creases and areas of loss/damage to some of the delicate die-cut floral extensions. The ribbon shows age and fraying. The illustrated surfaces retain beautiful color and detail despite being nearly 130 years old. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
A wonderful surviving example of elaborate Victorian calendar and botanical ephemera with crossover appeal to collectors of E. P. Dutton, antique calendars, Victorian floral illustration, die-cut paper, Bavarian printing and 19th-century decorative arts.
Complete January–December 1897 calendar. Sold intact as found; pages will not be separated.
