Up for sale is an original 1908 edition of "The Dial," the official yearbook of The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. This Gilded Age prep school volume is rich in early 20th-century history, striking period graphic design, and notable biographical profiles.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS & CONTENTS:
Two Early Brass-Era Automobile Print Ads: Features a full-page ad for the H. H. Franklin Mfg. Co. of Syracuse, NY (Type D 5-Passenger Model) on page xxi, immediately followed by a full-page ad for The Autocar Company (Levy & Fanning Co., Chicago) on page xxii.
Mortimer R. Proctor (Class of 1908): Future Governor of Vermont (1945–1947) and marble industry executive. Pictured on the senior class page (p. 38) with sports/club credentials, in the Orchestra section, and named on the Sixth Form Dance Committee frontispiece page.
Henry A. Colgate (Class of 1908): Heir to the Colgate-Palmolive company. Pictured on page 31 under his nicknames "Heinie" and "Wild Man," listed as Art Editor for The Dial board, baseball player, and member of the Dramatics club.
James Guthrie Shaw Jr.: Pictured on page 39 and in the 1907 Baseball team photo (p. 69) as Editor-in-Chief of The Dial.
Art Nouveau Frontispiece & Tissue Guard: Includes an intact, translucent tissue guard over the Art Nouveau "Sixth Form Dance" committee illustration.
Period Photography: Includes full-page team photos of the 1907 Football Team (wearing classic wool "H" sweaters) and the 1907 Baseball Team.
Additional Ads: Includes historic local and national advertisements (Phil Davis Photography, Sorensen's Chain Guard, etc.).
CONDITION DETAILS:
The interior text block and pages are exceptionally clean, bright, tight, and completely intact with minimal light toning consistent with age. The tissue guards remain fully intact. The outer binding shows shelf wear, rubbing, and leather chipping along the spine. The interior front hinge paper/cloth overlay has split along the gutter (exposing the inner backing board), but the internal signatures and main text block remain firmly bound and attached. Please examine all high-resolution photos for exact cosmetic detail.
