It was together by Porter J. Winn of Roanoke. Mostly newspaper, but there's some interesting ephemera and photos mixed in. He apparently was an artist who designed some war bond posters and he even had custom covers made.

The other album is listed separately unless otherwise shown.

Item Overview
This is the first of two massive World War II-era scrapbooks from the Porter J. Winn collection in Roanoke, Virginia, covering the period 1939 to 1942. The scrapbook is extremely heavy and full — approx. 23 lbs — and loaded with original newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera documenting the global conflict and American home front lead-up to U.S. entry into WWII.

Key Highlights & Topics Covered

Military & Global Events

Early war coverage: Germany’s invasions, Blitzkrieg, and European conflict beginnings
Battles in North Africa, Italy, and Europe’s war theaters
Naval warfare and U-boat action in the Atlantic
Leadership profiles and interviews (Hitler, Roosevelt, Churchill, etc.)
Reports on military strategy, troop movements, and battle outcomes
Maps, diagrams, and propaganda illustrations

Home Front & Local / Social Interest

U.S. public sentiment, editorial commentary, and reaction to early war news
Mobilization efforts, war logistical planning, and defense readiness at home
Local Roanoke / Virginia-focused wartime articles and features
Human interest stories: families, servicemen, casualties, and home ties
Advertising, propaganda, and period illustrations reflecting the era’s culture
Photos, illustrations, and artistic renderings clipped from newspapers

?? And this is just a sampling — the scrapbook covers many more topics and stories throughout its pages.

Condition Notes & Handling

The pages show expected age-related wear: yellowing, brittleness, edge fraying
Some clippings may be loose or delicately attached due to old adhesives
The scrapbook is extremely heavy and oversized; expect bulky packing
Because of mixed media inside (paper, glue, folds), careful handling and proper packaging are essential

Why This Is Valuable
