1940s Anchor Hocking Hillbilly Bowling Cartoon 4 oz Juice Glass Mid Century
***This listing is for the identical item shown in photos***
Fun vintage Anchor Hocking 4 oz juice glass featuring a humorous bowling cartoon in dark brown against translucent golden yellow glass.
The wraparound design depicts a chaotic bowling alley scene with a man/hillbillyfiring a gun toward the bowling pins, another man jumping into the air, and three people running from the commotion. The illustration is accompanied by the humorous phrases “To Heck With the Rules!”, “Bowl for Health”, and “Set ’Em Up in the Other Alley!”
The phrase documented as a bowling gag as early as 1935, when bandleader Ozzie Nelson reportedly used “set ’em up in the other alley!” as an ad-lib joke after something crashed during a radio broadcast. Even earlier 1934 newspaper advertisement literally headed “Bowl For Health!” promoting bowling as exercise.
This type of exaggerated rural/hillbilly sight gag was characteristic of American popular humor during the 1940s, adding to the glass's distinctive period character.
The bottom is impressed with the Anchor Hocking anchor trademark, confirming the maker. The small 4 oz size is consistent with a vintage juice tumbler rather than a standard drinking tumbler or shot glass.
The graphics and bowling humor give this piece wonderful mid-century character. A particularly fun collectible for an Anchor Hocking collection, vintage bowling display, retro barware collection, or bowling enthusiast.
The exact decorated design appears to be relatively uncommon; an identical example has not been identified during research.
Excellent Vintage Condition. No flaws noted. Graphics remain crisp and well-defined, and the yellow glass displays beautifully. Please review all photos.
