$59.99
Vintage 35mm color slide with a mount dated July 1961, showing U.S. Air Force Douglas C-124C Globemaster II serial 52-1049 parked on an airfield apron with ground personnel and servicing equipment nearby.
Visible markings include tail number 21049, “MATS,” “Military Air Transport Service,” and “U.S. Air Force.” The aircraft features bright orange high-visibility markings on the nose, rear fuselage, and wingtip. Exact airfield location is unconfirmed.
Historical background: Affectionately nicknamed “Old Shakey,” the C-124 was a four-engine heavy transport used during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Large clamshell nose doors allowed it to load military vehicles and other bulky equipment.
This particular aircraft, serial 52-1049, was later lost on August 26, 1970, when it struck Mount Pavlof, Alaska, while approaching Cold Bay on a flight from McChord Air Force Base, Washington. All seven crew members died. It was carrying satellite-observation equipment.
The July 1961 marking is the slide mount date and may indicate processing rather than the exact date the photograph was taken.
Includes one mounted slide as pictured. Please review the photo for image quality and the condition of the film and cardboard mount. This listing is for the physical slide.
