Remarkable original 1970s Southern California scrapbook and personal archive, assembled primarily during approximately 1973–1978. This is an intact collection that has been preserved as found, with photographs, correspondence, school and professional records, entertainment and sports ephemera, greeting cards, newspaper clippings and numerous original envelopes, many still containing their contents.
Highlights include:
• Disneyland ephemera and original photographs associated with R&B/funk group Creative Source performing at the Tomorrowland Terrace, accompanied by a period Disneyland entertainment program listing Creative Source showtimes at 9 PM and 11 PM. The scrapbook contains three photographs of the group performing, with portions of the Creative Source stage signage visible.
• Vintage Disneyland attraction ticket book material, including surviving adult A and D attraction coupons with 10¢ and 70¢ values and period Disneyland attraction listings.
• May 17, 1975 San Diego Padres material, including a period envelope marked with Jackie Mayfield’s name, the date 5-17-1975, and “2 tickets @ $2.50.” A ticket/rain-check remains inside the envelope. Accompanying newspaper material documents the Padres’ 4-1 game against Chicago attended by 49,599 spectators.
• Extensive original handwritten correspondence, thank-you notes, Christmas cards, Valentine’s material and personal letters, primarily dating from the mid-to-late 1970s. Correspondence represents numerous people and different walks of life. Some letters appear potentially connected to individuals experiencing significant hardship and possibly incarceration, although the complete correspondence has not been researched or verified.
• Original documents and correspondence from organizations including Minority Volunteers in Probation, County of San Diego Probation Department, San Diego City Schools and the University of California, San Diego.
• Professional recommendation/referral letters discussing youth work, probation programs, education and community involvement.
• UCSD Teacher Education Program acceptance correspondence from 1976.
• Middle school and high school report cards, progress reports and other educational records, providing an unusually detailed period record of the owner’s education and later professional development.
• Correspondence connected with the Southside Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).
• Numerous personal and family letters, including a particularly heartfelt handwritten letter from her father dated November 27, 1974.
• Wedding announcements and invitations, vintage Valentines, photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, period sports material and other 1970s ephemera.
Numerous envelopes throughout the scrapbook still contain their original contents. Every envelope and letter has not been individually opened, read or researched, so the complete contents of this archive are not fully documented.
The album itself shows expected age, handling and storage wear. Individual documents, photographs and pieces of ephemera vary in condition. Many pieces remain remarkably well preserved for approximately 50 years of age. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact contents and condition.
This collection has been kept intact exactly as found. Nothing has been intentionally separated from the album. Its appeal is not simply the individual pieces, but the extraordinary amount of interconnected material documenting the education, relationships, professional development, entertainment and everyday experiences of one young woman in 1970s Southern California.
