Discover a rare piece of American medical history with this genuine mid‑19 th century Dr. Mc Munn’s Elixir of Opium bottle. Estimated Age & Dating • Blow‑formed glass with an open pontil mark and an applied top, indicating it was crafted between 1837–1850, aligning with the early patent medicine era. Pontil scars disappeared by the 1860 s, while applied lips were common through around 1850. Manufacturer & Historical Background • Originally concocted in 1837 by Dr. John B. Mc Munn, this “Elixir” was marketed as a non‑narcotic remedy that treated a variety of ailments. • The formula gained popularity after A. B. Sands & Co. purchased and expanded its production circa 1841, helping it reach national distribution. • Produced in the United States, bottles like this were likely blown at Eastern glassworks, commonly in New York or New Jersey, then shipped across the country and abroad.Remarkable Opium Context: Marketed as /"denarcotized,/" this elixir was deceptively potent, containing full narcotic effects despite claims to the contrary. While the recipe removed “narcotine” with sulphuric ether, narcotine is not the opioid portion—so the product remained highly addictive, consistent with many patent remedies of the era Bottle Details Color: Clear‑aqua with charming antique gases and striations Height: Approximately 4.25/"T Mouth: Appliedfinish—tooled or slab-cut to seal with cork Base: Open, ground-off pontil marks from hand-blowing Markings: Embossed “Dr. Mc Munn’s Elixir of Opium” Condition: Excellent, no chips, no cracks, no ghosting. !Please Note: By modern standards, this elixir is considered a potent narcotic medicine. This listing is for the empty antique bottle only, not the contents. It’s a historical artifact, not a consumable product.
