AT&T Logoed Rare Glass Ware Spec Samples From 1980's:

I own an advertising specialty company - now in our 47th year I am happy to report - and I worked in the industry for many years prior to establishing my own firm. For a long time my best client was what was formerly known as "The Bell System". Of course after divestiture it was broken up into what was generally called the "Baby Bells" - and later morphed into many variations. So over the years we worked very closely with Western Electric, AT&T, Southern Bell, Lucent Technologies, OFS, Avaya, etc. I collected many over-run samples, one-of-a-kind spec samples, and the likes. I am now selling much of that collection via .
In 1983 AT&T made a somewhat radical alteration of their logo. It included a globe effect with 12 lines, and there was a positive and negative version. The highlight in the upper left corner was to always be the lightest shade. That created many issues, especially in the early days of adoption of this new logo. Many items were incorrectly imprinted, even some that I produced. In fact, if still available, I have a listing of several different samples of jobs we produced wrong if interested.
At the time I had a supplier of die cast metal emblems that applied their emblems to a variety of items, including glassware. I commissioned this supplier to produce several of their pieces using the style of logo as shown on these two samples. It featured a contoured top to accommodate the globe and a straight bottom. Frankly, I thought it looked a bit classic and accentuated the new logo.
Apparently I was wrong. I presented these one-of-a-kind speculative samples to my primary AT&T account of the day, the Atlanta Works. Not only did my contact there not like what I did with the logo, he told me explicitly to not do it this way. His understanding of the new logo was that it required "staging". By that, he meant there should be clear area around the logo, if only a little.
So, as far as I know, these two examples are the only ones ever produced in this configuration, as I did not have my supplier run others.
Here are details about the two spec samples:A. The clear glass tumbler is 12 ounces, 5.75" high. The AT&T logo is a cast metal pewter in a 3-D design. It has a black enamel fill and is 1.75" high. It is very slightly "dapped", which means that it bends to conform to the shape of the glass. It is affixed with a permanent 3M adhesive, but should be hand washed. The glass is by Libbey and both the glass and medallion are made in the U.S.A.B. The black one is some sort of coated glass, also by Libbey and like above, made in the U.S.A. It is 16 ounces and 6" high. It holds more liquid as it is slightly taller, but also does not tapper as the glass example does. This is the same emblem logo, but a bit more dapped due to the greater curve of the glass. I posted side photos to show what I mean.
Although these items are approximately 37 years old, they are in remarkably outstanding as new condition. The finishes are fantastic!
