Aesthetic Movement, circa 1885-1895, wood and composition gesso, original fabric:
$149.00
Antique Late Victorian Aesthetic Movement picture frame dating to approximately 1885-1895. Constructed of wood with applied composition gesso ornament, the frame features an attractive botanical design of twining vines, leaves, and hop cones set against a textured crosshatched ground. The design is complemented by an original fabric-covered liner and ornate gilt inner slip surrounding an oval opening.
The combination of naturalistic decoration, layered materials, and rich textural contrasts is characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement period of the late nineteenth century.
Condition is consistent with age and use. The frame retains its original fabric liner, which exhibits wear and losses in areas. The gesso ornament shows typical age-related crazing, finish wear, and minor losses. The frame retains an attractive antique patina throughout. Please review all photographs carefully as they form part of the description. Size: 19"H x 17"W x 2" deep, Wt. about 5 lbs. Wood backing and glass incl. A fine example of late Victorian decorative arts and an attractive display piece for artwork, photographs, or period interiors.
