Antique 1890s French Dominican Rosary Steel Hand-Riveted Trifolium Cross Monasti:
$125.00
Antique French devotional rosary dating to the late-Victorian era (circa 1890–1899). Crafted from rugged, industrial and hand-finished organic materials, giving it an austere, monastic character and an entirely magnetic all-steel construction.
With its hyper-rugged, magnetic steel construction and weathered matte finish, this rosary beautifully mirrors the monastic cloister and WWI French military"Poilu" trench-stylesacramentals of the era. Utilitarian, non-reflective materials were highly favored by regional prayer groups, religious orders bound to vows of poverty, and later, soldiers in the field who required a silent, completely unbreakable shield of spiritual protection.
The Crucifix:Crafted from solid, heavily magnetic steel featuring an iconic French trifolium (trefoil) shape. This is a three-point mechanical layout where the corpus is secured to the cross using three distinct, hand-hammered pins/rivets—a beautiful testament to pre-automated industrial assembly. The cross has oxidized into an authentic, dark gunmetal-grey patina.
The 1890s Origin Stamp:The reverse side of the cross features a crisp, distinct, block-letter"FRANCE"stamp. Following the US McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, export items were mandated to bear the country of origin. This single-word format (pre-dating the 1920s "Made in France") anchors the piece to the late 1890s window.
The Linking:Built using the classic Frenchchaîne à nœud papillon(bow-tie / double-eyelet) linkage. Every link is shaped from stiff, magnetic steel utility wire. Features a beautiful vintage hand-twisted steel wire "field repair" directly above the crucifix loop, testifying to a lifetime of devoted handling.
The Centerpiece Medal:A detailed antique medal depictingOur Lady of the Rosary(the Virgin Mary and Christ Child presenting the Rosary to a kneeling figure, traditionally Saint Dominic, with an angel at Mary's feet). The reverse features theSacred Heart of Jesus, the paramount symbol of French national devotion during the late 19th century.
The Artisan Beads:59 standard-count dense, organic beads characteristic of antiquecocoa wood(bois de coco) or hand-shavedjujube seeds. Demonstrating beautiful pre-industrial artisan craftsmanship, these beads vary naturally from rounded to flattened profiles, displaying subtle, facets shaped by hand. Generations of prayer have worn the surface into a gorgeous, deep espresso patina.
Wear:Shows beautiful, high-friction "lived-in" wear. Faint, superficial surface rust is present in the tight crevices of the steel, highlighting its utilitarian history.
Bead Condition:One bead features an aged split that exposes its deeply fibrous organic core (visible in photo), but it remains secure on its wire loop.
Full Length:approx.13-3/8" from top to bottom of cross here
