Rare antique Homan Silver Plate Company Sick-Call Outfit, a late-19th-century Catholic sacramental set produced by the Homan Silver Plate Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Very hard to find is the included original Homan literature identifies the set as “Homan’s Sick-Call Outfit.” The booklet describes the original outfit as containing eleven articles housed in a quarter-sawn oak cabinet reinforced with decorative metalwork and lined in purple satin.
The cabinet measures approximately 11½" x 10½" x 4½", remarkably close to the original dimensions printed in the period literature of approximately 11⅝" x 10⅝" x 4½".
The silver-plated sacramental centerpiece disassembles into multiple components and features an ornate crucifix with figure of Christ and INRI plaque, two candle holders, decorative arms, gold-colored interior font/bowl and pedestal base.
Also included are two matching round silver-plated plates/patens, each decorated with an ornate IHS Christogram in the center and decorative foliage around the border.
One additional small ornate circular silver-colored fitting/component is included as pictured.
Of particular interest is the original Homan Sick-Call Outfit booklet, containing the manufacturer's illustration and description of the outfit along with period testimonials/recommendations from Catholic clergy. Several visible testimonials are dated 1897, including correspondence from locations such as Green Bay, Wisconsin; Portland, Maine; Galveston, Texas; and St. Augustine, Florida.
One of the silver-plated components is marked for the Homan Silver Plate Co. and indicates Quadruple Plate / Sick-Call Outfit / Pat’d April ’97.
This is an uncommon surviving piece of late-19th-century American Catholic religious history. The original cabinet, major sacramental centerpiece, matching plates and especially the surviving original Homan literature make this a particularly interesting display or research oak cabinet with decorative metal corners and cross
