Antique WWI Troop Ship Teak Barrel From RMS Mauretania Old Lady Of The Atlantic
For sale is a piece of maritime history: a miniature souvenir desk barrel crafted from the original teak wood decking of the legendary RMS Mauretania.
Launched by the Cunard Line in 1906, the RMS Mauretania was the sister ship to the Lusitania and famously held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing for over two decades. Affectionately nicknamed "The Old Lady of the Atlantic," she served with distinction as both a luxury liner and a vital World War I troopship (HMT Mauretania). When she was retired and dismantled in 1935, her premium timber decks were salvaged and turned into beautiful desk items and historical keepsakes.
Interesting facts about the Mauretania:-When World War I broke out, the luxury liner was stripped of her fine furnishings, painted in striking, high-contrast geometric shapes called "Dazzle" camouflage, and renamed HMT Mauretania (His Majesty's Transport)The wild paint job didn't hide the ship; instead, it completely distorted her shape, making it nearly impossible for German U-boat captains to calculate her exact speed, distance, or heading through a periscope. She was so blindingly fast, averaging over 25 knots, that she successfully outran multiple German submarines that attempted to target her. She simply moved too quickly for a torpedo to be accurately aimed.
-Before the United States officially entered WWI, the Mauretania was secretly used to carry millions of dollars in gold bullion from the British government across the Atlantic to New York. This top-secret cargo was used to secure vital war supplies, ammunition, and food from America, making her a high-stakes, floating vault traversing a deadly ocean.
-The RMS Mauretania was in active service for 29 years, from her maiden voyage in 1906 until her retirement and salvage in 1935.
-The teak wood decking was salvaged and turned into this souvenir barrel in 1935 when the ship was officially retired and dismantled at the shipbreaking yards, by British shipbreaking companies, most notably the Hughes Bolckow Shipbreaking Co. based in Blyth, Northumberland, England. In great condition, no chips, cracks, or repairs. Shows minor patina from time, but overall an excellent example see photos for most accurate visual description as this is the exact item you'll be purchasing.
