Antique 1914 British Hand Carved Signed Gift Picture Frame w/Oak Leaves Acorns:
$155.00

This is a beautifully hand crafted antique wooden picture frame dating to June 1914. The square frame features a neatly carved raised border that encloses a boldly textured background. Oak leaves and acorns are intricately carved in high relief next to the central picture window. The face of the frame features custom entwined initials carved above and below the photo opening. The initials OW are located above the window, and the initials CM are located below, sitting right next to the carved date of 1914.The Historical StoryThis frame carries a heartwarming family history from the eve of the First World War. The reverse side features a hand written note pasted directly over the back of the photo opening. The note reads: For Dear Olive with Grandpa's love and best wishes for many happy returns of the day, 16th June, 1914.This personal inscription reveals that the frame was a custom, hand crafted gift from a grandfather to his granddaughter, Olive, created just months before global conflict changed Europe forever. While the style resembles British internment camp craftwork from places like Knockaloe or Douglas, historical records show Britain did not begin detaining citizens until August 1914, making this a peacetime folk art family heirloom.Material and DimensionsThe frame is made of solid carved wood. The total exterior dimensions measure approximately 16.5 centimeters by 13.5 centimeters. The central picture opening measures approximately 6.3 centimeters by 3.4 centimeters.Condition and Display FeaturesThis antique item is in solid structural condition with unique historical character. The reverse side features a functional hinged wooden stand for table display, alongside eye screws ready for a hanging wire. The paper note on the back is partially torn around the edges but remains firmly in place, likely where it was affixed over a century ago. A natural check in the wood grain has been securely reinforced with a strip of wood to prevent further separation and preserve the piece for future generations.
