Antique 1915 Mexican Tin Ex Voto Retablo Bandits Saint Anthony Folk Art Framed:
$349.99
An original Mexican devotional ex-voto painted on heavy-gauge tin, dating to circa 1915. The painting depicts a Mexican countryman named Ufemio Recendiz kneeling before a group of threatening, armed bandits on horseback, pleading for his life. Above the scene, Saint Anthony appears holding the infant Jesus, while a fellow countryman stands beside the kneeling figure, depicted on a much smaller scale as a gesture of respect.
The original Spanish inscription recounts an event on March 3, 1915, when Recendiz, while defending Mexico, encountered bandits who threatened to kill him. In his moment of danger, he appealed to Saint Anthony of Bolle for protection and was miraculously spared. The painting was created as an expression of gratitude for this divine intervention and provides an example of Mexican religious folk art referencing the historical era of Mexican nationalism and revolution.
The painting is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Artemis Gallery on December 23, 2015, documenting its circa-1915 attribution and provenance from Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, California. Professionally shadowbox framed by FastFrame in Boulder, Colorado, with Tru Vue Museum Glass providing 99% UV protection.
