The Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company was founded in 1876 by Melville R. Bissell in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Initially producing carpet sweepers, the company quickly became a household name, revolutionizing home cleaning before the widespread adoption of vacuum cleaners. Their innovative designs and effective mechanical sweepers made them a staple in homes across America and beyond.
This display stand, featuring the "Cyco" ball bearing mechanism, highlights Bissell's commitment to improving their product's performance and ease of use. Such displays were common in general stores and hardware shops, serving as both advertising and product showcases. The "Cyco" mechanism, introduced around the turn of the 20th century, was a significant advancement, making the sweepers more efficient and durable.
