Item Description
Authentic Antique Dressel 4-Way Railroad Switch Signal Lantern
Up for sale/sale is a beautiful piece of railroad history: a genuine Dressel 4-Way Railroad Switch Lantern, manufactured by the Dressel Railway Lamp & Signal Company out of Arlington, New Jersey. This early-to-mid 20th-century lantern was originally used trackside or on a caboose to signal train crews.
Features & Details:
• Maker Marks: The top cap is clearly embossed with: "DRESSEL / ARLINGTON, N.J. / U.S.A."
• Lenses: Features a classic 4-lens setup consisting of deep cobalt blue and red glass bullseye lenses.
• Sliding Door: The sliding front panel moves smoothly to allow full access to the interior.
• Finish: Features a solid, clean black painted finish over the heavy metal body rather than raw rust or heavy corrosion. No major structural dents or rust-through holes.
Condition & DIY Lamp Conversion Note:
This lantern was converted into a rustic household electric lamp decades ago. The original internal kerosene oil fount/pot has been removed and replaced with a custom wooden block holding a white ceramic light bulb socket.
• Glass Condition: The glass lenses are whole and secure. One of the blue lenses features internal fracturing (stress cracks from historic heat exposure), but the exterior surface remains completely smooth to the touch, and the glass is entirely structurally intact.
• Wiring Note: Sold as-is for rewiring. The vintage power cord is old and brittle. To ensure safe operation as a functional lamp, the buyer will need to replace the electrical cord before plugging it in.
This makes a phenomenal, heavy-duty display piece for any railroad collector, history buff, or rustic home decor enthusiast!
Shipping and Handling:
• Fast Dispatch: Ships out securely within 3 business day of payment.
• Secure Packaging: Carefully boxed and packed securely with plenty of bubble wrap to protect the antique glass lenses during transit.
