Antique Keisai Eisen Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print Vertical Diptych Edo 1830s:
$499.99
An antique Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen (1790–1848), depicting an elegantly dressed woman wearing a distinctive blue plaid kimono and traditional wooden geta sandals.Dating to approximately the 1830s, during Japan’s Edo period, this striking bijin-ga (picture of a beautiful woman) reflects Eisen’s characteristic attention to feminine beauty, elaborate hairstyles, fashionable textiles, and graceful movement. The composition is executed in the tall, narrow kakemono-e format, consisting of two vertically joined ōban sheets. The woman’s flowing garments feature an intricate blue-gray plaid pattern, delicate floral motifs, and contrasting layers of soft peach, and pale blue. The artist’s signature is clearly visible in the lower-left portion of the composition. An independently cataloged example of this exact composition appears in published sale records under Keisai Eisen, identified as a vertical diptych (ōban tate-e).Dimensions: Approximately 73 × 25 cm (28.7 × 9.8 inches).Antique condition with visible age-related wear and imperfections, but generally well-preserved paper and strong surviving woodblock detail. The print exhibits overall light paper toning, scattered minor discoloration, small spots, surface creasing, and localized edge wear. There is a pronounced horizontal line of brown discoloration along the original join between the two sheets, particularly visible on the reverse. The paper appears largely intact, with no obvious extensive tears or significant missing sections. The composition retains crisp black linework, particularly in the elaborate hairstyle and finely patterned textiles. Some fading or color alteration may have occurred over time. The reverse shows substantial visibility of the woodblock printing through the thin Japanese paper. It also bears a faint handwritten phonetic notation of the artist’s name, Eisen, and a small red-bordered Japanese numerical inventory label. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. Detailed images of the front, reverse, artist’s signature, original sheet join, and historical markings are provided. An attractive example of nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, particularly appealing for its unusual plaid textile design, graceful composition, and intricate woodblock craftsmanship.Reasonable offers accepted. If desired, I can frame the print using archival materials for the cost of shipping alone.
