Antique Nicolaus Copernicus CDV Russia 19th C -- Holy Grail Card. Extremely Rare:
$11995.00
Extremely scarce 19th-century carte-de-visite style photographic portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus, produced by the St. Petersburg photographic firm Vezenberg & Co. [Везенбергъ и Ко.].
The elaborate studio backmark reads “Фотографiя Везенбергъ и Ко.” and gives the address Voznesensky Prospekt, House No. 26/30, St. Petersburg. The portrait is identified in period manuscript at the lower margin as “Коперник” [Copernicus].
Vezenberg & Co. was operating in St. Petersburg by 1865. This appears to belong to the firm’s series of photographic reproductions depicting notable historical, literary, artistic, and scientific figures. Comparable Vezenberg material with this general format survives only infrequently.
I believe this example dates to the late 19th century, possibly 1870s–1880s, but I am listing the date conservatively because the exact printing date has not been independently established.
Original period photograph mounted on card. Attractive ornate Russian photographer’s backmark. Moderate age toning and expected surface/edge wear; small corner wear visible. Please inspect all photographs carefully for condition.
A fascinating early photographic representation of one of the foundational figures in the history of astronomy and science, with excellent crossover appeal to collectors of early photography, Russian photography, scientific history, astronomy, and Copernicana.
Guaranteed original period photograph/card, not a modern reproduction.
