This antique Royal Vienna demitasse tea cup featuring a hand painted portrait of Ariadne, Princess of Crete from Greek mythology. The portrait cup is a stunning piece of Victorian-era collectible dinnerware. Hand-painted with gold and white jeweled enamel on porcelain, this two-piece cup and saucer set is signed by Friedrich Riemer, 19th century master miniaturist and painter, adding to its authenticity and value. Made in Germany between 1880 and 1910, this cobalt blue and gold cup has a 3 ounce capacity and should be hand-washed to preserve its intricate design. The gold and white decorated saucer has a salmon color center which is closely represented in the darkened image of the saucer pictured. A true gem for collectors of fine dinnerware and serveware, this original piece exudes elegance and charm.
There are areas of wear on the gold decoration on the cup behind the handle and on the saucer as well. There is one tiny black dot on the white interior of the cup. There is also a blemish or flaw on the cherub's bent knee in the portrait. Otherwise the set is in very good condition for its age. The cup measures approximately 2 1/4" high x 2 1/8" in diameter and holds 3 ounces. The saucer is approximately 4 1/2" in diameter.
