Antique Transylvanian Reverse-Painted Glass Icon – Virgin Mary & Child Jesus (Nicula Style)
Item OverviewUp for sale or purchase is a magnificent piece of Eastern European religious folk art: a traditional reverse-painted glass icon depicting the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) holding the Christ Child. This icon is rendered in the distinctive, charmingly naive style of Nicula, Transylvania (Romania). It features bold primary colors, a stylized floral border, and geometric checkered pattern work on the Madonna’s vestments, which are emblematic of regional peasant craftsmanship. Approximately 12 1/4 inch by 10 1/4 inch.Historical & Cultural BackgroundThe art of icoane pe sticlă (icons on glass) is a celebrated folk phenomenon rooted deeply in Transylvanian history.
• The Nicula Phenomenon: Following a famous 1699 miracle where a wooden icon of the Virgin Mary wept at a church in Nicula, the village transformed into a massive pilgrimage site. Local peasants began creating vibrant glass icons to sell to these travelers.
• The Technique (Hinterglasmalerei): This painting style required immense skill. The artisan had to paint the image in reverse layers directly onto the back of the glass. Fine details, outlines, and signatures were applied first, followed by mid-tones, and finally the broad background layer. When turned over, the glass layer adds a luminous gloss that protects the pigments and gives the colors their striking intensity.
The Cyrillic-based inscription at the top reads "Фєсiоара С Мариꙗ" (Fecioara Sfântă Maria / Holy Virgin Mary), matching the traditional templates used by 19th and early 20th-century iconographers.Detailed Condition ReportThis item is offered in authentic antique/vintage condition with character-defining signs of age that confirm its rustic folk origin. Please read the specific breakdown below and review all high-resolution photos carefully before offerding. Sold AS IS. There is flaking.1. Painting & Glass• Color & Image Preservation: The central image of the Virgin Mary and Child retains spectacular color saturation and remains highly visible and visually impactful.
• Flaking & Paint Loss: Consistent with true antique reverse-glass paintings, there are notable areas of flaking and paint lift where the medium has separated from the smooth glass panel. This is most prominent across the top edge near the white script lettering, in the upper white "clouds," and lightly in the lower corners.
• Glass Condition: The glass panel is structurally intact with no cracks, fractures, or major scratches across the central composition.2. Wooden Frame & Backing• Frame Structure: The icon is housed in its original, rustic hand-hewn wooden frame painted with its classic black and green borders. The joints are solid, but the frame shows expected scuffs, natural weathering, and light dings from handling over decades.
• Backing Panel: The protective thin wood backing exhibits a natural vertical split running down the left-hand side. This is a typical consequence of wood shrinking and aging over time and does not threaten the structural integrity of the frame.
• Hardware: The glass and backing are held firmly in place by original, weathered metal tabs and rusty fasteners driven into the frame body. A makeshift hanging wire fashioned from vintage red-coated wire is attached at the top center. Related Items:
