Great vintage postcard!
ITEM DESCRIPTION:- Type: Antique early 20th-century color multi-stone printed lithograph commercial advertising notification trade card postcard.
- Publisher & Photographer: Lithographed by the premium fine art printing house A. Braun & Co. of Karlsruhe, Germany. Features their lower left front margin attribution signature line and the legal copyright protection stamp "MUSTER SCHUTZ" in the lower right corner.
- Subject Matter: A beautiful Art Nouveau era commercial illustration featuring a prominent advertising banner for "GERWIG & CIE, BÂLE" at the top. The graphic composition depicts an alpine maiden in profile holding a bundle of roses next to a Swiss cow, flanked by an orange tree, wheat stalks, and snow-capped mountain peaks. The right side shows sailboats on the water under a vivid orange sky. The lower cardstock contains a printed French commercial traveler notification header: "Avis de Passage de notre voyageur Monsieur..." hand-stamped with the representative name "ALPH. KURZ". This specific layout documents the early commercial graphics work of renowned German poster artist Hans Rudi Erdt.
- Postal History: Divided back configuration completely unposted and unwritten on the reverse side. The card was designed to be sent through the mails as a formal postcard advance notice to local Swiss merchants prior to a traveling salesman's arrival.
- Historical Interest: Outstanding primary source cross-collectible document combining high-end German Plakatstil / Art Nouveau commercial graphic art with early 20th-century Swiss merchant trade history in Basel (Bâle).
Clean unposted vintage condition with a light red name stamp on the front face. Displays crisp corner points, remarkably straight borders, excellent bold color ink registration, and minimal uniform natural age paper toning on the back. My postcards are in good or better condition and are standard sized (3.5"x 5.5") unless noted. Please examine the enlarged images provided to determine condition, and feel free to ask questions.
