A Bialetti stovetop espresso maker in stainless steel, the lower chamber a polished sphere and the upper a tapered column with a domed lid and a black phenolic handle. The body is engraved with the Bialetti name and the little man with the moustache, the firm's trademark. It comes apart into the three parts the design requires: boiler, funnel filter and collector, and the brass safety valve is visible in the side of the boiler.
The moka pot is one of the few twentieth century objects that changed a national habit, and Alfonso Bialetti got the idea in 1933 from watching laundry. Early washing machines boiled water in a sealed tub and forced it up a central pipe through the clothes, and Bialetti built the same circuit in aluminium for coffee: heat water in a closed chamber, let the pressure drive it up through the grounds, collect it above. Before that, espresso in Italy was something you went out for, because it needed a bar machine. After it, coffee at that strength was a domestic act, and the pot became so ordinary that one sits in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The little man on the side is a caricature of Alfonso's son Renato, who turned a workshop that sold a few thousand pots a year into a company selling millions.
All three parts present and the pot assembles and seats correctly. The stainless is bright with surface scratching across the boiler and the column and some dulling at the handle end. The handle is sound with no cracks or heat damage. The brass safety valve is clear and unobstructed. The funnel filter is present. The rubber gasket inside the collector is in place but is old and should be replaced before use, which is a standard consumable for this pot. Interior coffee staining consistent with use. It has not been put on a hob and is sold untested.
About eight inches tall, taken against the tape in the photographs. Three parts, one pot.
