This image was displayed in hundreds of public schools from the 1930’s till even now.
The original oil-on-canvas portrait was started in 1796 when Washington was 64 years old.
It was never delivered to Washington and remained unfinished.
The original painting is jointly owned by the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
