$4.99
Vintage real photo postcard featuring Le Grand Théâtre in Bordeaux, France, captured in a detailed black-and-white street scene. The reverse identifies the view as “BORDEAUX (Gironde) — Le Grand Théâtre” and bears the printed designation “Véritable Photo.”
The theater dominates the photograph, with its impressive columned façade, broad entrance steps, rows of arched doorways, and sculptural figures along the roofline. The angled viewpoint shows both the front and side of the building, while neighboring buildings recede into the distance along the street.
There is plenty to explore beyond the architecture. Numerous vintage automobiles are parked around the theater or pictured in the roadway, and pedestrians stand or walk near the entrance and across the open square. Tram tracks run through the foreground and continue down the street, adding another appealing transportation detail.
An ornate freestanding street clock is a particularly distinctive feature of the composition. Its multiple clock faces, decorative base, and tall ornamental metalwork create a striking foreground accent against the theater’s columns. The combination of the clock, period vehicles, pedestrians, and tram rails makes this an engaging record of the surrounding streetscape as well as a handsome architectural view.
The postcard has decorative scalloped edges and a photographic finish. A “L走” publisher’s logo appears on the front, with an Éditions d’Art imprint and the address 15, rue Martel, Paris, on the reverse. The card is numbered B. 1753. The back also carries the printed wording “Fabrication Française” and “Reproduction interdite.”
The reverse is unused, with no handwritten message, recipient address, postage stamp, or postal cancellation visible.
An appealing addition to collections of Bordeaux, French theaters, European architecture, real photo postcards, vintage automobiles, tramway streetscapes, or public street clocks. The busy foreground offers a wealth of small details for collectors who enjoy studying everyday life in older city postcard with noticeable wear and photographic surface damage. There is a conspicuous irregular area of surface loss at the lower-left corner of the front, extending into the street and automobile portion of the image. Additional small white spots, edge chips, rubbing, and surface scratches are visible elsewhere. The scalloped edges and corners show handling wear. The reverse has age toning and scattered yellowish spots or stains. Despite these flaws, the theater, clock, vehicles, and much of the surrounding scene remain clearly visible. Unposted and unwritten. Please examine both scans closely, particularly the lower-left front damage. The exact postcard pictured is the one offered.
