Douglas World Cruiser "New Orleans"—1924 Round-the-World Flight Photo 4.75x3.5"
One of Only Two World Flyers to Circle the GlobeDESCRIPTIONOriginal period photograph of the Douglas World Cruiser "New Orleans," one of the four U.S. Army Air Service biplanes built for the 1924 attempt to fly around the world. The aircraft's name is legible in period lettering on the forward fuselage just below the cockpit. The New Orleans and her sister ship Chicago were the only two of the four World Cruisers to complete the full journey, logging roughly 27,500 miles across 28 countries and crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in just over six months. The New Orleans was piloted by Lt. Erik Nelson with Lt. John Harding as flight mechanic, and was christened before departure with water drawn from the Gulf of Mexico. This print shows the big Liberty engine biplane on the ground surrounded by a crowd of uniformed men, with a covered grandstand style structure visible in the background, consistent with one of the flight's many stopovers on its round the world route.Measures 4.75 x 3.5 inches on hard card stock, not a postcard.Scanned at 600dpi archival quality so every detail of the aircraft and the crowd around it is preserved for you. Every effort is made for fact checking and provenance including background research through news and historical archives. If any listing is incorrect in any way and you're unsatisfied with the item, please connect with me and I'll make it right. Corners show light rounding and edge wear typical of period handling. A few small age spots are visible in the sky area, well clear of the aircraft and the crowd of figures. The image itself is sharp and bright with strong tonal contrast, with no tears or creases running through the photograph. Reverse is blank buff card stock with no writing, stamps, or captions.
