Kataranskite is endemic to the Kolvitsa massif / Kataranskii Cape area of the Kola Peninsula (Murmansk Oblast, Russia), well beyond the Arctic Circle. It was first found in 1904 at this locality and named after it. It is a coarse-granular pegmatitic vein rock (a specialized gabbro variety) composed mainly of hypersthene and labradorite feldspar. The characteristic violet-purple color comes from manganese-bearing phengite inclusions within the plagioclase matrix, formed by metasomatic alteration.Material of this quality is extremely limited. Polished spheres of Kataranskite are rarely seen for sale anywhere.**Appearance**
Rich purple and violet banding and swirling patterns against a dark black matrix, with metallic silver colored inclusions throughout. The sphere also displays striking silver chatoyancy — bright, silvery reflective flashes and a silky sheen that shifts with the light as the sphere is turned. High-gloss polish. Every angle shows a different unique pattern.**Details**
