George Butler & Co. — “Butler’s Special Hollow Ground” — 9/16 — Custom Blue Transparent Acrylic
Offered here is a restored and custom rebuilt George Butler & Co. straight razor, featuring a 9/16” blade with the blade face marked “Butler’s Special Hollow Ground.”
George Butler & Co. was one of Sheffield, England’s long-established cutlery manufacturers. The Butler family’s cutlery history reaches back into the late 18th century, with the BUTLER mark granted in 1768. By 1816 the business was operating as George & James Butler at Trinity Works, and the firm later became known as George Butler & Co. In 1864, the company moved to larger premises at 105 Eyre Street, Sheffield, while retaining the historic Trinity Works name. Butler produced razors alongside pocket knives, scissors, table cutlery and other edged goods, and the company continued operating into the 20th century before eventually being liquidated in 1952. (Hawley Sheffield Knives)
This particular example retains the desirable “Butler’s Special Hollow Ground” marking on the blade face. During the restoration, I performed a topical regrind, refreshing the blade surfaces while avoiding the more extensive reshaping associated with a complete regrind.
For the custom rebuild, I paired the vintage Sheffield blade with a set of transparent blue acrylic scales. The translucent material gives the razor a clean modern appearance while allowing light to pass through the scales, producing different shades and depths of blue depending upon the lighting and background.
A solid blue acrylic tail spacer was fitted to complement the transparent scales and continue the blue theme through the entire scale assembly. The razor was assembled using brass pins and brass pivot washers, then finished with ornate 14-karat white-gold-plated collars. The bright white-gold appearance of the collars contrasts particularly well with the blue acrylic while the underlying brass hardware retains a traditional element in the construction.
The completed razor brings together historic Sheffield steel and a distinctly modern custom build. The surviving Butler’s Special Hollow Ground marking preserves an important part of the blade’s original identity, while the transparent blue acrylic, matching spacer and white-gold-plated collars give the restored razor an entirely new presentation for its next generation of use.
Specifications: George Butler & Co. straight razor; Sheffield, England; blade face marked “Butler’s Special Hollow Ground”; 9/16” blade; topical blade regrind; custom transparent blue acrylic scales; solid blue acrylic tail spacer; brass pins and pivot washers; ornate 14k white-gold-plated collars.
As with all razors restored through Ye’Ole Straight-n-Strop Shop, the photographs are considered part of the description. The final edge will be finished on natural honing stones. The buyer may request a particular natural finishing stone when available; otherwise, the default finishing edge will be completed on a Japanese natural stone (JNAT).
Thank you and God bless.
