Incredible 1918 WWI Skull & Crossbones US Army Brass Trench Art Shell Shield POW:
$2750.00
This is the greatest piece of trench art I've personally owned. You rarely, if ever, see skulls depicted on American military trench art.One side features an embossed skull and crossbones above a panel that is engraved "Void, France/May 1919."Opposite side has an embossed shield with American flags that is engraved "P W.E. Co./247/World War/1914-1918."Below shield is embossed banner that is engraved "Mary Decaprio."Lots of other great details including stars along the trim, hand stippling, etc.
This trench art vase was owned and/or made by private Domenic De Caprio (1894-1950), Prisoner of War Escort Co. 241. De Caprio was born in New York City, but by the outbreak of WWI he had relocated to New Castle, PA, where he was employed as a laborer at a tin mill. De Caprio was inducted into the Army and served overseas in France from August 1918 until October 1919. Most of his time in France was spent with Prisoner of War Escort Co. 241. The POW escort companies were responsible for the care of German prisoners until they could be repatriated and return to Germany.
Shell vase is made from a 75mm shell case. Lower third is fluted. Rim of shell is serrated.
3-3/8" diameter by 13-1/2" high
Condition: Shell has been polished at some point, otherwise, in very good antique condition.
