Junior Twentieth Century Catholic Club & Columbian Squires Minstrel Show ProgramMiss Mary Carney, President of Junior Twentieth Century Catholic Club, InterlocutorPhilip McCaul, Chief Squire, Cardinal O'Connell Circle, Columbian Squires, InterlocutorMassasoit HallFall River, MATuesday, February 11, 1936Offered as a historical document of 1930s regional theater, in Fall River, Massachusetts, Bristol County, the Junior Twentieth Century Catholic Club and the Columbian Squires were mid-20th century Catholic youth and civic organizations that occassionally organized local variety programs, including traditional minstrel shows. The Massasoit Hallwas a prominent community meeting place that hosted a variety of social clubs, dances, and musical performances.
The Twentieth Century Catholic Club was originally founded in nearby Brockton, Massachusetts in 1905, this club - along with its "Junior" branch for teenagers and young adults - focused on Catholic educational, charitable, and social initiatives. This included hosting formal dances and community musical productions.
Columbian Squires: As the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, local chapters ("Circles") across New England frequently sponsored athletic leagues, youth leadership activities, and community fundraisers
During the early-to-mid 1900s, community-based minstrel shows and "potpourri" variety acts were standard fundraising events for fraternal, civic, and parish groups across New England towns like Fall River, Middleboro, and Brockton. These amateur theatrical events usually featured choral ensembles, skits, and localized humor. Because these historical performances heavily utilized racial stereotypes they phased out of mainstream community theater and parish entertainment schedules by the late 1960s as civil rights awareness grew.
A multi-page souvenir program packed with local business advertisements was standard practice for community fundraisers in 1936.Local businesses — ranging from neighborhood banks, grocers, pharmacies, and coal suppliers to prominent downtown department stores — purchased ad space to show civic support. This booklet includes the Program listing, names of chorus and other performers, the committee names, ushers, a card of thanks and alisting of the Patrons and Patronesses who paid a small fee (often a quarter or a dollar) to show their support.
