The Khmer Krom are Theravada Buddhist, following the same ancient Buddhist traditions practiced in Cambodia for centuries.

Their religious life revolved around the pagoda (wat), the monkhood, and a deep cultural code of honour, humility, and community obligation.

Every village maintained a wat, often the largest and most ornate structure in the community. These pagodas were more than places of worship: they were schools, meeting halls, refuge points, arbitration centres, and in wartime, intelligence hubs.

Their combination of Buddhist doctrine and ancient animist practice produced a community that viewed resistance against oppression as both a cultural duty and a karmic responsibility.

When the Vietnam War intensified, monks, often respected above any secular authority, quietly encouraged villagers to resist communist intrusion.

The Viet Cong and later the Khmer Rouge saw the Buddhist establishment as a threat and targeted monks for intimidation, taxation, and disappearances.

This moral authority helped the CIDG, CIA, and MACV-SOG. When the monks endorsed cooperation, the entire village followed. Pagodas became safe houses for PRU informants, meeting points for MIKE Force recruiters, and listening posts where monks recorded rumours, troop movements, or VC demands placed on the population.

A simple blessing from a head monk could shift dozens of fighters into the ranks of CIDG or the shadow networks run by CIA field officers.

Among Krom fighters, Buddhist amulets, bracelets, charms, and monk-blessed cloth strips were worn under uniforms or sewn into web gear. Many believed these provided protection in battle, and Special Forces advisers often commented on how Krom warriors would visit monks before operations.

This belief system produced soldiers with deep discipline, stoicism, and a sense of karmic destiny, qualities admired by their American commanders.

Inside Cambodia, the religious element intensified. When the Khmer Rouge began destroying pagodas and executing monks, the Krom saw themselves as defenders not only of their people but of their entire religious heritage.

Thousands of volunteers joined FANK specifically because they viewed the fight not just as a war, but as a defence of Buddhism itself.
