Virgin fron Kazany icon with oklad or silver cover. Kazany is a place in Russia where there is a legend that during the Tartar invasion the inhabitants of the small village of Kazanyi that was under siege prayed to the Virgin asking for help. The Madonna appeared to the villagers and the Tartars went away, leaving the village and its population safe. To remember that day every year the village celebrates with a large festival. The Kazan icon is a highly revered image within the Russian Orthodox church and is considered a protective image within Russia. The icon's age is 19th centuryThe icon features the painted image of the Virgin Mary and the Christ child on wood covered by an engraved and embellished silver cover known as an oklad. The icon measures approximately 4 3/4" in height and 3 3/4" in width."The technique used to make this icon suggests it is probably a masterwork made in the monasteries by the monks. The plated base on the wood section was used only by master monks." The oklad can be lifted easily off the wood base as the original nails that held it in place are no longer present. The icon shows age is the darkened painted image. The painted wood icon has not been cleaned. The icon is perfectly rectangular; the distortions are the fault of the photographer.Purchased in Budapest in 2005. From the second half of the 19th century.
