Original WWI German 1914 Liège / Lüttich Commemorative Medal – Kaiser Wilhelm II – Mayer & Wilhelm Stuttgart

Offered here is an original German WWI patriotic commemorative medal produced in 1914 by Mayer & Wilhelm of Stuttgart, commemorating the German capture of Liège (Lüttich), Belgium on 7 August 1914.

This is a privately produced wartime patriotic commemorative medal and not an officially awarded Iron Cross decoration.

The obverse features a sharply struck uniformed portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II, surrounded by:

WILHELM II DEUTSCHER KAISER

The small maker's signature M. & W. ST. identifies the manufacturer as Metallwarenfabrik Mayer & Wilhelm, Stuttgart.

The reverse features a prominent 1914 Iron Cross with imperial crown, Wilhelm cypher, oak-leaf decoration and the date 1914, surrounded by the inscription:

ZUR ERINNERUNG A. D. EINNAHME V. LÜTTICH
7. AUG. 1914

Translation:

“In remembrance of the capture of Liège – 7 August 1914.”

The exact medal design is documented in specialist references as KaiserWelt #106 and is known in period Mayer & Wilhelm production.

Historical significance

Liège was one of the first major objectives of the German advance through Belgium in August 1914. German forces under General Otto von Emmich, with Erich Ludendorff prominently involved in the assault, captured the city on 7 August 1914. Fighting against the surrounding Belgian forts continued until 16 August.

This medal was produced during the wartime patriotic-medal boom to commemorate that early German military event.

Material

The medal is made from a very lightweight silver-colored metal, believed to be aluminum/light alloy, with a bright reflective or “mirror” finish.

Condition

Attractive original used condition with a bright reflective finish.

The medal retains strong detail throughout the portrait, lettering and Iron Cross design. Visible condition includes:

light age and handling wear, fine surface hairlines and scratches, small areas of spotting/discoloration and light surface oxidation consistent with age.

The suspension eye remains present. No ribbon is included.

The high-relief portrait of Wilhelm II and reverse Iron Cross retain excellent definition, and the inscriptions remain clear and fully readable.

Nice original condition overall with mirror-like finish, showing light wear and signs of use.
