PAIR OF ANTIQUE 1880s GOUPIL & CIE MILITARY PRINTS AFTER ÉDOUARD DETAILLE
A beautiful matching pair of late-19th-century French military masterpieces published by the elite firm Goupil & Cie. These feature the highly detailed Franco-Prussian War scenes of academic master Édouard Detaille, titled "L'Alerte" (signed/dated 1877) and "En reconnaissance" (signed/dated 1879).
These high-quality 1880s gallery plates are printed on delicate thin paper containing the official publisher stamps ("Photographie par Goupil & Cie"), tipped down onto their original heavy presentation cardboards. The lower corner features the authentic embossed Goupil raised blind stamp seal. Under a direct flashlight, the paper retains its beautiful, authentic 19th-century mineral crystal glint and texture.
100% ORIGINAL PERIOD PRESENTATION:Both pieces are entirely untouched and housed in their original thin oak frames. They retain their gorgeous original 19th-century wavy/cylinder glass and feature raw, beautifully oxidized solid oak wood backboards with period wire brads and hanging wire.
DIMENSIONS:* L'Alerte (Square): Frame is 18" x 16" | Image is 11-1/2" x 9-5/8"* En reconnaissance (Panoramic): Frame is 18-1/2" x 14-1/2" | Image is 12" x 8-1/4"
CONDITION REPORT:* L'Alerte: Excellent antique condition with minor, uniform age-toning.* En reconnaissance: The thin center print itself is in excellent condition with no water damage, tears, or fading. There is a historic water stain (tide mark) on the bottom-right corner of the heavy surrounding cardboard mat, along with minor spots of foxing on the border. The central image remains perfectly clean and unaffected.
These will be packed carefully and securely.
