$249.00
US model 1879 Springfield Trapdoor carbine rear sight with “C” mark, good serviceable condition. I believe it will fit 1873-1888 models. Please see the pictures and ask any questions. See my other listings for more trapdoor rifle and carbine sights.
Identifying Features
• The "1–8" Base Marks: These graduations represent 100 to 800 yards, allowing you to use the stepped sight base for quick elevation adjustments without flipping the ladder up.
• The "C" Stamping: To confirm it is a genuine carbine sight, look for a small "C" stamped on either the side of the base or on the folding ladder leaf. The rifle version of this same Model 1879 sight is only graduated from 1 to 4 on the base.
• The Ladder: When flipped up, the folding ladder leaf on the carbine version is typically graduated all the way up to 1,500 yards.
• The "B" Marking: Many variants of this sight base feature a letter "B" near the 200 or 300-yard mark (specifically at 266 yards). This was the "battle sight" setting used by cavalry units for optimum distance during "rolling fire" engagements.
Historical Context
It was incredibly common for earlier 1873 and 1877 Trapdoor carbines to be retrofitted with this Model 1879 sight. Because the mounting screw hole spacing remained identical across all Trapdoors, the military frequently upgraded older cavalry weapons during routine arsenal refurbishments.
