Offered here is a rare early U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer cap device of the first pattern, following the 1897 Navy Uniform Regulations, which specified "the letters U.S.N. in silver upon a gilt foul anchor." The CPO rate was established in 1893, and this style of device is among the earliest issued to US Navy Chief Petty Officers.
This example has the correct early construction: a gilt brass fouled anchor, twisted-wire cable, separately applied silver "USN" letters, and two wire loop attachments on the reverse. Loop-backs predate the hinged pin-and-catch devices first specified in the 1922 regulations.
