LEWIS CARROLL — A TANGLED TALE — FIRST EDITION, 1885

First Edition • Arthur B. Frost Illustrations • Elaborately Gilt Leather Binding • All Edges Gilt

A striking1885 First Edition of Lewis Carroll’sA Tangled Talein an exceptionally handsome red leather binding—richly gilt on the spine and boards, with raised bands, decorative gilt tooling, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, andall edges gilt. Housed in a fitted red slipcase.

Despite a significant structural defect—the front board is detached—this remains an unusually beautiful example of Victorian bookmaking and a compelling decorative object. The brilliant red leather, elaborate gilt spine, and gleaming gilt page edges give the book considerable presence on display, while the interior is remarkably clean and fresh.

Lewis Carroll.A Tangled Tale. London: Macmillan and Co., 1885. First Edition.Withsix illustrations by Arthur B. Frost, including the frontispiece.

A Tangled Talegrew out of a series of mathematical puzzles Carroll contributed toThe Monthly Packet. Rather than presenting them as ordinary exercises, Carroll embedded the problems in ten whimsical episodes—or“Knots”—combining mathematics with the wordplay, absurdity, and humor associated with the author ofAlice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The puzzles were later gathered and substantially revised for this first book edition.

Arthur B. Frost’s six illustrations add another dimension to the book. His wonderfully eccentric scenes are particularly well suited to Carroll’s mixture of logic and nonsense.

This copy has especially strongdecorative appeal. The ornate gilt-tooled leather spine, gilt-bordered boards, decorative gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers and all-gilt edges transform the volume into something considerably more luxurious than the standard publisher’s binding. Displayed in its slipcase with the richly decorated spine exposed, it is a particularly attractive example of anantique gilt book and Victorian fine binding.

Condition:Front board completely detached; the adjoining endpaper remains with the detached board, and all components are present. The text block remains intact. Apart from this major structural defect, the book is exceptionally attractive: the interior is clean and fresh, all six Frost illustrations are present, and the gilt edges remain bright. Leather and gilt show expected age and wear, particularly around the spine and detached joint. Fitted slipcase shows wear. Please examine the photographs carefully for the binding structure and condition.

A visually exceptional copy worthy of consideration both as aLewis Carroll first editionand as anornate Victorian decorative binding.
