Up for sale/sale is an incredibly unique piece of American precision manufacturing history. This is a vintage master-bar style vernier caliper manufactured by the notable L.C. Renick Co. out of Santa Barbara, California.Unlike standard, commercially available 6-inch or 12-inch calipers, this custom-engineered tool features a jaw window explicitly engraved for "OUTSIDE 7.62". This highly specialized specification directly links its production to a historic military defense contract, built specifically to gauge and inspect munitions components, weaponry barrels, or ordnance parts utilizing standard military 7.62 caliber geometry.Historical Provenance & Markings:Federal Heritage: The inside of the heavy-grain wooden lid features a crisp, authentic ink stamp reading "U.S. GOVERNMENT PROPERTY", verifying its deployment inside a mid-century military arsenal, naval shipyard, or defense contractor plant.Machinist Provenance: The base of the box features a secondary vintage stamped ownership mark: "U.S. GOVERNMENT PROPERTY OF A. GAVERE". This fascinating personal provenance details its post-war surplus purchase by a private machinist (A. Gavere), who cleanly inked his name straight over the surplus text to claim it for his private toolkit.Included Components:The Master-Bar Caliper: Complete with its dual-slider design featuring a built-in rear fine-adjustment block anchor for precise, micro-fine alignment. The steel components bear a gorgeous, light age-appropriate patina that gives it incredible character without compromising the legibility of the engraved numbers. The sliders move cleanly along the master-bar, and the thumbscrews turn as intended. The original paper insert shows minor yellowing and light fold creases expected of real shop documentation but remains fully intact and entirely legible.
