Rare Vintage1950s Hand-Carved Nigerian Ebony Wall Plaque – "Afro-Silhouette" British West Africa Profile Relief. An exceptional piece of mid-century African folk art, this hand-carved solid ebony wall plaque features a striking side profile with meticulously detailed, geometric hair textures.Carved from dense, heavy Nigerian ebony wood, the piece showcases a highly polished facial silhouette contrasted beautifully against the matte finish of the hand-tooled hair. What elevates this plaque as a verified historical artifact is the incredibly rare, intact original paper label on the reverse side that reads:“AFRO-SILHOUETTE hand sculptured ebony profile imported from Nigeria, British West Africa. This piece is definitively dated prior to October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained independence from the UK. Finding an original paper export label intact from the mid-to-late 1950s is highly uncommon for African trade art of this era.
