Vintage Star Wars inspired bootleg SST Toy Lightsaber Lazer Sword w/ RARE Burgess Flashlight Hilt variant The product is a rare vintage Star Wars inspired Super Sonic Toys (SST) toy lightsaber replica “Lazer Sword”. This RARE collectible item is perfect for fans of the Star Wars franchise. The toy lightsaber represents a unique piece of memorabilia that is sure to appeal to collectors interested in science fiction and horror genres, especially those who appreciate vintage items. The SST Lazer Sword (sometimes stylized as the Laser Sword), was manufactured by Super Sonic Toys (SST). It hit the market in late 1977, capitalizing on the absolute craze of the original Star Wars film during the holiday window when Kenner had no official lightsabers on shelves. Here is how this specific variation came to be:
• Super Sonic Toys originally designed the Lazer Sword using standard red Eveready flashlights retrofitted with a custom plastic collar to hold the rigid, cloudy white plastic tube.
• The "Burgess" Hilt Connection: Because demand for these knock-off lightsabers exploded overnight in late 1977, SST couldn't source enough Eveready flashlights to keep up with production. To solve the shortage, they began purchasing heavy-duty D-cell flashlights from the Burgess Battery Company instead. This supply pivot is exactly why this toy has the SST factory stamp on the custom plastic handle bottom but also features a blue handle stamped Burgess. It is a rare, well-documented piece of early Star Wars pop-culture bootleg history! As the photos show, the item has normal wear and tear from having been played with in 1977, but it is functional! Because these were toys were meant to be bashed together by kids, finding them intact is highly unusual, making them quite valuable to niche Star Wars bootleg collectors. Related Items:
