Vintage 1998 Russian Hand-Painted Lacquer Egg – St. Petersburg Maritime Scene
A beautiful vintage Russian decorative lacquer egg featuring a detailed, colorful hand-painted maritime scene inspired by historic St. Petersburg, Russia.
This charming collectible depicts two traditional sailing ships resting along a waterfront, an elegantly dressed woman in period clothing standing on a cobblestone promenade, and historic Russian architecture in the background. The tall church spire appears to represent the famous Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
The artwork is surrounded by delicate green ornamental foliage against a deep, glossy black background, creating a striking contrast with the warm architectural tones and blue-gray waters.
History & Origin
The egg bears a green Cyrillic inscription that appears to read “С-Пб 98 г.”, likely referring to St. Petersburg and the year 1998.
If interpreted correctly, this suggests the piece was produced in Russia in 1998, making it approximately 28 years old.
Decorative lacquer eggs are a recognized part of Russian folk-art and souvenir traditions, often featuring historical landmarks, landscapes, architecture, and scenes from Russian cultural heritage.
