A particularly attractive vintage Conway Stewart No.476 “The Universal Pen” fountain pen and matching propelling pencil set, finished in green and black marbled celluloid with gold-tone trim.
Dating approximately to the late 1930s / c.1940, the No.476 is one of Conway Stewart’s earlier Universal Pen models and is less commonly encountered than many of the company’s later numbered pens. Specialist references document the model with marbled finishes, gold-plated trim and lever-filling construction.

The fountain pen has been lightly and sympathetically restored, taking care to retain its original vintage character.
A new ink sac has been fitted, and the lever-filling system has been tested and is operating correctly.
The 14ct gold nib is an especially pleasant writer, with a soft, responsive feel and some attractive natural line variation. A writing sample is provided in the photographs.
The pen has been cleaned and flushed and is ready to fill and use.
Propelling PencilThe matching propelling pencil accompanies the fountain pen and remains functional. It is supplied with lead fitted.
Together, the two pieces make a particularly attractive period Conway Stewart set.
ConditionBoth pieces present in excellent vintage condition overall, particularly considering their age.
The green marble celluloid retains excellent colour and pattern, while the trim presents very well. There are some minor signs of previous use and age, including light surface marks and small areas of wear, but nothing that significantly detracts from the overall appearance.
The fountain pen shows very little wear overall, and the nib is particularly clean.
The Conway Stewart presentation box is also included. It shows age-related storage wear and foxing to the interior consistent with its age; please refer closely to the photographs.
Overall, a very appealing and increasingly difficult-to-find Conway Stewart 476 Universal fountain pen and pencil set, with the added benefit of a freshly serviced fountain pen and a lovely soft 14ct gold nib.
