Vintage Ella Grasso Connecticut Governor Bronze Medal 1974-1978 Capitol:
$20.00
This is a vintage bronze commemorative medal honoring Ella Grasso, the 83rd Governor of Connecticut and the first woman in United States history to be elected a state governor in her own right (not as the wife or widow of a former governor). The obverse features a detailed relief portrait of Governor Grasso encircled by "State of Connecticut Governor," with "Elected 1974" and "Re-Elected 1978" noted along the lower rim beside small star devices. The reverse depicts the Connecticut State Capitol building in Hartford, with the inscription "Connecticut State Capitol, Hartford Connecticut, 1879" (the year the Capitol was completed).
Struck in solid bronze with a rich, warm patina, this piece measures approximately 2.5 inches (about 64mm) in diameter and has good heft in hand. It was almost certainly produced to commemorate Grasso's historic tenure, likely tied to her second inauguration following her 1978 re-election. Grasso remains a significant figure in American political history — she went on to be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
A great piece for collectors of political exonumia, Connecticut historical memorabilia, or collections celebrating women in American politics. Please see photos for a complete visual assessment of condition.
