Vintage Hand Carved Wood Mother Cat & Kitten Sculpture
Charming vintage hand-carved wooden sculpture depicting a mother cat seated protectively over her sleeping kitten.
This piece has wonderful folk-art character, with individually carved details throughout. The mother cat features large painted eyes, incised eyelashes, whiskers and facial details, while the curled kitten rests between her front paws. Carved texturing throughout the wood gives both figures additional depth and character.
The sculpture has a rich dark brown finish with areas of lighter wood showing through from age and handling. The underside shows the natural wood grain and carving/tool marks, along with a drilled opening in the base.
Measures approximately 7.5 inches tall with a base approximately 6 x 5 inches.
Unsigned. Exact maker, wood species, country of origin and date are unknown.
Condition is good vintage condition with age-related surface wear, finish variation, small scratches and marks consistent with an older hand-carved wooden piece. There is also some natural checking/splitting in the wood, including near the kitten/base area. Please review all photographs closely as they are part of the condition description.
A wonderfully expressive vintage cat carving with an especially appealing mother-and-kitten subject.
