Vintage Japanese red silk furisode, the long-sleeved formal kimono traditionally worn by unmarried women for coming-of-age, weddings, and other ceremonial dress.
The ground is a clear scarlet red through the shoulders, sleeves, and upper body, shading into deep black at the hem. Across the black field is a dense parade of lacquered ox carts of the Heian court, with large chrysanthemums, folding fans, and blossom wheels. Gold linework picks out plum branches on the red ground. Sleeve panels carry the same carts, fans, and flowers. The lining is white, warming to pale pink at the hem.
