Vintage Stanley Bailey No. 5 Jack Plane — Made in England — Early 1970s English Type 6 Configuration — Full-Size Traditional Woodworking Hand PlaneA particularly attractive vintage Stanley Bailey No. 5 jack plane, manufactured in England and presenting exceptionally well for its age. This is the classic full-size No. 5 bench plane, approximately 14 inches long, built for general stock preparation, flattening, straightening edges, preliminary smoothing, and the traditional woodworking tasks that made the Bailey-pattern plane a workshop standard for generations.CUTTING IRON / FUNCTIONThe vintage cutting iron is present together with its chipbreaker and adjustment components. The plane was given a basic functional test and does remove material, but the cutting iron retains its existing vintage edge and has NOT been freshly reground, professionally sharpened, or tuned for fine finishing work. This was intentional.Rather than unnecessarily removing original steel or establishing a bevel according to someone else’s preference, the cutting iron has been left for the next owner to sharpen, hone, and set according to his or her own woodworking requirements.Accordingly, this plane is not being represented as a freshly sharpened, professionally tuned, ready-to-take-translucent-shavings user plane. A woodworker intending regular use should expect to hone or sharpen the iron and make final frog, chipbreaker, lateral, and depth adjustments to personal preference. For a collector, the lack of aggressive regrinding or cosmetic over-restoration is an advantage: the plane retains considerably more of its honest vintage character. This example is marked BAILEY, MADE IN ENGLAND, and No. 5 in the cast-iron body and retains its distinctive STANLEY lever-cap badge. Based on the combination of construction details present, this plane corresponds closely with the English Stanley Type 6 configuration of the early 1970s, likely preceding the later molded-handle generation introduced during the 1970s.Among the identifying period features are the ribbed English casting, bright plated lever cap with recessed orange/red STANLEY marking, steel-colored depth-adjustment wheel, light-metal hardware, and traditional wooden knob and rear tote. Together, these details make it considerably more interesting than an unidentified later-production Stanley plane and give it a clear place within the evolution of Stanley’s English-made Bailey bench planes.CONDITION & PRESENTATIONThis plane has been carefully cleaned and preserved rather than aggressively refinished. The goal was to retain the character, original-period appearance, patina, markings, and surviving finishes rather than make an old tool artificially look new.The black finish/japanning remains notably strong. The raised BAILEY, MADE IN ENGLAND, and No. 5 markings are crisp and highly legible. The plated lever cap presents especially well, with an unusually strong surviving STANLEY badge. The dark wooden front knob and rear tote show beautiful age, grain, wear, and color consistent with a genuine vintage working tool. They have not been stripped back to fresh wood or heavily refinished. The smooth cast-iron sole and cheeks retain honest oxidation, coloration, scratches, spotting, and other evidence of age and previous use. These surfaces have deliberately not been polished to a mirror finish. The plane has also been photographed partially disassembled so that the internal frog, adjustment mechanism, iron, chipbreaker, lever cap, and related components can be examined rather than hidden beneath the assembled plane.COLLECTOR DETAILSMaker: StanleyLine: BaileyModel: No. 5Tool type: Jack plane / bench plane / woodworking hand planeManufacture: Made in EnglandApproximate period: Early 1970sConfiguration: English Type 6 characteristicsSole: SmoothBody: Cast ironIron/blade: SteelFurniture: Dark figured wood knob and toteOperation: Manual / hand poweredApproximate length: 14 inchesColor: Black, dark brown, steel/silver with orange-red Stanley detailingCondition: Very good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear and patinaThe No. 5 jack plane occupies the important middle position in the traditional Bailey bench-plane lineup. Longer than the familiar No. 4 smoother but substantially more manageable than the long jointer planes, the No. 5 became one of the most versatile bench planes ever produced. It remains desirable both to traditional hand-tool woodworkers and Stanley collectors.WHY THIS EXAMPLE STANDS OUTWhat makes this particular No. 5 attractive is not simply the Stanley name. It is the combination of its full-size No. 5 format, English manufacture, early-1970s transitional characteristics, strong surviving japanning, crisp cast markings, exceptionally attractive Stanley lever cap, aged wooden furniture, complete appearance, and restrained preservation. It displays exceptionally well and would be equally appropriate in a serious vintage-tool collection, traditional woodworking shop, cabinetmaker’s workshop, historic tool display, craftsman’s office, or alongside other Stanley Bailey planes. Please examine all photographs carefully. They form an important part of the description and document the actual plane being offered, including markings, surface condition, wooden furniture, sole, iron, lever cap, frog, and adjustment components.Vintage tools naturally show evidence of their working lives. Minor scratches, oxidation, patina, discoloration, finish wear, tool marks, and other age-related characteristics should be expected and are part of the authenticity of the piece.Sold as the photographed vintage Stanley Bailey No. 5. No reproduction or modern replacement plane is being represented. Related Items:
