🤎 VINTAGE HANDMADE NAVAJO COIN OR STERLING SILVER & PETRIFIED WOOD RING 🤎

A beautiful older handmade Navajo ring featuring a large, high-domed cabochon believed to be fossilized/petrified wood, surrounded by substantial traditional silverwork.

Weighing 11.34 grams, the ring displays wonderful evidence of hand fabrication throughout, including an individually formed bezel, heavy twisted-wire border, six applied hand-stamped silver ornaments and a substantial three-way split shank individually joined to the large flat backplate.

The maker is unknown, and no specific artist attribution is being BELIEVED FOSSILIZED / PETRIFIED WOOD

The centerpiece is a large hand-cut rectangular cushion/pillow-form cabochon displaying beautiful natural variation through honey, caramel, reddish brown, smoky brown and nearly black areas.

The appearance changes considerably with the light. Under varying natural daylight, portions of the material become more translucent and reveal remarkable depth and internal variation.

The cabochon measures approximately:

• 20.45 × 13.85 mm

• 0.805 × 0.545 inches

The stone is free of cracks and chips and remains exceptionally secure within its handmade bezel, with absolutely no detectable movement or rattle.

The polished surface displays numerous fine scratches and abrasions consistent with decades of wear. These are surface wear rather than cracks or structural damage and give the stone wonderful character appropriate to an older, well-worn handmade ring.

Extreme macro photographs have intentionally been included to document this wear clearly and transparently. The magnification and reflected light make the surface marks considerably more prominent than they appear under normal viewing.

The stone has not been professionally gemologically tested. Fossilized/petrified wood is my identification based upon its appearance and characteristics and cannot be TRADITIONAL HANDMADE CONSTRUCTION

The ring is entirely handmade, with subtle asymmetries and tool evidence remaining throughout its construction.

The large cabochon sits within an individually fabricated bezel surrounded by a substantial twisted-wire border. Three applied round silver ornaments decorate each side of the face, each bearing radiating hand-stamped decoration surrounding a raised center.

The underside provides an especially revealing view of the construction. A substantial three-way split shank rises independently on either side and is individually joined to the large flat silver backplate.

Variations between the individual components, stamped impressions, solder work and finishing are consistent with traditional hand fabrication rather than modern mass production.

The three-way shank measures approximately 4.15 mm (0.163 inches) wide at the back center.

I see no obvious evidence that the shank has ever been cut or COIN OR STERLING SILVER — JSP TESTED

The ring is unmarked; however, I personally performed a non-invasive JSP scratch-stone acid test, with a reaction consistent with coin or sterling silver.

A small amount of metal was transferred from an inconspicuous area of the ring onto a JSP testing stone. The silver-testing acid was then applied only to the transferred metal streak on the testing stone.

No acid touched the ring at any time.

The transferred metal produced an immediate blood-red reaction upon contact with the testing solution and remained red for the entire five-minute period I observed it before discarding the test.

Based upon this observed JSP scratch-stone test, I am identifying the metal as coin or sterling silver.

Because the ring is unmarked and has not been professionally XRF or laboratory tested, I am not claiming a specific numerical fineness such as .900 or MEASUREMENTS, SIZE & WEIGHT

Ring face:

• Approx. 24.95 × 18.20 mm

• Approx. 0.982 × 0.717 inches

Cabochon:

• Approx. 20.45 × 13.85 mm

• Approx. 0.805 × 0.545 inches

Three-way shank at back center:

• Approx. 4.15 mm

• Approx. 0.163 inches

Total weight:

• 11.34 grams

• 0.400 IMPORTANT SIZING INFORMATION

Approximate wearable size: US 8–8¼

Because this is an older handmade ring with an unusually shaped interior, determining its size required more than simply reading where it stops on a conventional tapered ring mandrel.

The underside of the large faceplate/backplate is flat, while the substantial three-way split shank curves around the finger beneath it. This creates a somewhat flattened, non-circular interior opening rather than the nearly perfect circle found in many modern rings.

I therefore took several independent measurements and compared the ring on two different mandrels:

• Measured interior circumference: approximately 56.95 mm

• Inside width, side-to-side at the widest point: approximately 18.90 mm (0.744 inches)

• Inside height, measured from the underside of the flat faceplate/backplate to the opposite inside edge of the shank: approximately 5/8 inch (15.88 mm)

• On my steel jeweler’s mandrel, the ring stops just below approximately US size 7¾.

• However, this steel-mandrel reading appears artificially small because the flat underside of the backplate contacts and bottoms out against the tapered mandrel while visible open space remains between portions of the shoulders and the mandrel. The steel mandrel therefore does not completely fill the ring’s unusually shaped interior when the ring stops, so I do not believe the approximately 7¾ reading accurately represents its wearable size.

• On a second plastic ring-sizing mandrel, the ring settles between approximately US size 8¼ and 8½.

• Most importantly, I independently measured the ring’s actual interior circumference at approximately 56.95 mm. This measurement is not dependent upon how the flat-backed ring happens to seat on either tapered mandrel and corresponds approximately to the US size 8–8¼ range, depending upon the particular sizing standard or conversion chart used.

As an additional practical comparison, I have a known US size 9 ring that fits my pinky somewhat loose. This ring also fits that same finger but is only very slightly loose, consistent with it fitting somewhat smaller than the known size 9.

Taking all of these measurements and comparisons together, particularly the measured 56.95 mm interior circumference, I am describing the ring as approximately:

US SIZE 8–8¼

Because the interior is not perfectly circular, its fit may differ somewhat from a conventional round ring of the same nominal size. The 56.95 mm measured interior circumference should therefore be considered the most useful objective measurement for comparison.

Please compare these measurements with a ring that fits properly or consult a professional jeweler before purchasing.

All measurements and sizing are CONDITION

Very good vintage pre-owned condition with beautiful, honest evidence of long-term wear.

The large cabochon has no cracks or chips and remains completely secure within its bezel with absolutely no rattle or movement.

Its polished surface displays numerous fine scratches and abrasions accumulated through what appears to be decades of wear. Rather than detracting from the piece, this honest surface wear gives the stone wonderful age-appropriate character. The scratches have been intentionally documented in extreme close-up photographs for complete transparency.

The handmade silver setting remains structurally sound. The substantial three-way split shank, backplate, bezel, twisted-wire border and all six applied stamped ornaments remain intact.

The silver displays fine scratches, surface marks, naturally darkened recessed areas, subtle irregularities and visible tool evidence consistent with both hand fabrication and years of wear.

I observed no cracks, breaks, missing silver components or obvious evidence of previous resizing.

Nothing has been intentionally concealed in the photography. Extreme close-ups have deliberately been included so prospective buyers can evaluate the stone’s surface, silverwork, construction and condition in considerable detail.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the PHOTOGRAPHY

All photographs were taken outdoors between approximately 5–6 PM in natural daylight under varying sky conditions.

The changing natural light was intentionally used to demonstrate the stone’s variations in color, translucency and depth, as well as the details, patina and condition of the handmade silverwork.

Extreme macro photographs magnify surface scratches, tool marks, handmade irregularities and other tiny details considerably beyond their appearance to the unaided eye.

Color, translucency, brightness and contrast may vary somewhat according to lighting conditions, screen settings and individual devices.

All sales are final unless the item has been grossly beautiful older handmade Navajo ring combining coin or sterling silver, substantial traditional silverwork, an unusually constructed three-way split shank and a striking large cabochon believed to be fossilized/petrified wood.

Its surviving tool evidence, natural patina and decades of honest wear give this ring tremendous character—the kind of character that simply cannot be reproduced in a new piece. 🤎🪶
