WWI - Original Model 1915 5th Jaeger Zu Pferde Officer's Uniform With Cav. Belt:
$3000.00
Offered here is a very rarely-encountered, so called "Model 1915" WWI-era wool uniform and cavalry belt for a German commissioned lieutenant of the mounted 5th Jäeger zu Pferde Regiment (Jäeger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr. 5).First formed in 1908, the 5thJäeger's served garrison duty in the city of Mulhouse, which was part of the Alsace region of France that had been occupied by Imperial Germany following the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s. The colors of the 5th Jäeger zu Pferde, consisting of black and green, was used by the regiment up to and through their service in the First World War.
Perhaps the most famous action taken by the 5th Jäeger zu Pferdecame on August 2 1914 when, just a day after Germany entered WWI on the side of the Central Powers, a mounted patrol from the 5th crossed the French border into the town of Delle. The German patrol leader, 22-year old Lieutenant Albert Mayer, was shot off his horse and killed by French infantry; becoming the first German combat death of WWI.
In 1916, the 5thJäeger zu Pferde found themselves largely removed from horseback warfare and were divided up amongst other German infantry divisions to fulfill different roles on multiple fronts during WWI. There is photographic evidence online that some squadrons of the 5th were used as grenade-wielding Stormtroopers (Sturmtruppen) within the German armed forces in WWI.
The uniform offered in this listing is in near mint condition; I would argue it likely was worn very little to none in it's 100+ years of existence. There are some very light moth nips, but the overall shape of the tunic for it's age is incredible. All three collar catches are present, as is the false-white collar and all buttons (both the center ones and the field-grey crown buttons). Of particular note is the sewn-in lieutenant shoulder tabs for the 5thJäeger zu Pferde (in green/black) and the green-tinted feldgrau wool fabric of the coat. The color tinting in particular was done by GermanJäeger troops to differentiate themselves from their counterparts, and it is something very seldom seen on WWI German combat uniforms today.
Also included with this uniform is an equally-as-rare belt being the WWI German leather cavalry belt. German cavalrymen, like the 5th Jäeger zu Pferde, wore a belt specific to their branch of service and this was the belt that was chosen and worn by them. It is being offered here, with the uniform, as an addition to cover the service of this particular unit from WWI.
This is a unique opportunity, for both WWI and Imperial German collectors alike, to own a hard-to-find uniform from a rarely encountered unit of the Imperial German Army. Don't miss this chance to own it!
