Both pieces feature the name Hiryu (“Flying Dragon”), together with imagery associated with the ship’s name and the Imperial Japanese Navy.
The inscriptions identify the event as the launch of the aircraft carrier Hiryu at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on November 16, 1937.
Hiryu was one of the most historically important aircraft carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She later served with the 2nd Carrier Division and participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. In June 1942, Hiryu fought at the Battle of Midway, where she was ultimately lost.
What makes this offering especially interesting is that two matching examples have remained together. Single launch commemoratives are collectible in their own right, but finding a surviving pair gives the set a much stronger display presence and historical character.
The raised dragon design is particularly appropriate: Hiryu literally means “Flying Dragon.”
These are not later souvenirs commemorating the ship after the war. They are tied directly to the vessel’s 1937 launch ceremony, years before Hiryu became one of the best-known Japanese carriers of the Pacific War.
The surfaces show scratches, discoloration, plating loss, oxidation, staining, and other age-related wear. The condition differs between the two pieces, so please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition of each item.
Sold as a set of two only.
For a collector of Imperial Japanese Navy artifacts, Japanese aircraft carriers, Pearl Harbor history, or prewar naval memorabilia, this is a particularly evocative surviving pair connected to the beginning of Hiryu’s story.
