Phu Bai Combat Base served as a major U.S. signals intelligence hub during the Vietnam War, anchored primarily by the U.S. Army Security Agency's 8th Radio Research Field Station (RRFS).
Key Facilities and Units
• The 8th RRFS (Tracy / The Eagles' Nest): Established in the early 1960s south of Huế, this top-secret signals intelligence (SIGINT) unit intercepted, analyzed, and decrypted North Vietnamese and Viet Cong communications.
• The AN/FLR-9 Antenna: The base featured a massive circular Wullenweber antenna array, commonly known as the "Elephant Cage," used for high-frequency radio direction finding and intercept operations.
• Project Drill Press: From 1966 to 1968, the U.S. Air Force Security Service's 6994th Security Squadron operated specialized electronic reconnaissance aircraft out of the Phu Bai airfield, coordinating collection efforts directly with the 8th RRFS.
Operational Impact and History
• Tactical Support: Intelligence gathered at Phu Bai provided crucial, real-time tracking of People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) troop movements along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
• Tet Offensive (1968): The Phu Bai compound came under direct attack during the 1968 Tet Offensive as enemy forces pushed through the Huế region, though intelligence personnel continued operations under fire to provide warning and tracking updates.
• Withdrawal: Intelligence operations at the base scaled down as U.S. combat forces withdrew, with facilities transitioning to South Vietnamese control by late 1972 before the base was ultimately seized by the PAVN in March 1975
This is an original engraved Vietnam Zippo lighter from 1960’s - 1975 Vietnam war era.
The lighter case is in a used condition with some signs of wear.
As the product is an old item, there are scratches and stains from age. Please see the picture for the details or ask me before your purchase.
I can send the lighter with the original insert inside Australia but international post the original insert has to be disassembled and it sometimes is still returned as they deem it as dangerous as it has been used so
For safety reasons and shipping rules, I will ship with the oil removed and disassemble the lighter. (case, inside unit, spring and flint) It’s better anyways as it’s original.
You will need to re-assemble by yourself. It’s easy - if you’re not sure please ask me how.
Overall a very rare and collectible original Vietnam zippo with lots of historical and social significance.
